What Is Good Mileage on a Used Car?

odometer displaying higher mileage on used car

If you’re searching for a used car, you’ll want to — of course — pay attention to the car’s physical and mechanical condition. However, you’ll also want to check the mileage. What is good mileage on a used car? It depends! Many would suggest shying away from a used car with over 100,000 miles, but if it has a solid service history and runs smoothly, it could be a great buy.

Below, you can learn more about good mileage for a used car, as well as other factors you should consider as a shopper.

How to Shop for a Used Car

When you’re searching for a pre-owned car, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as you shop:

  • Usage: If a car is driven 75,000 miles in busy city traffic, it’ll wear down sooner than one that’s driven 75,000 miles on the open highway. If possible, try to get more information about the car’s driving history.
  • Location: Warmer and drier climates are more forgiving toward vehicles than cold, wet climates.
  • Condition: Have the car inspected by a certified mechanic to get an idea of the car’s condition. Mechanical problems or rust, for example, can be revealed with an inspection. Figure the inspection cost into your budget.
  • Maintenance: Review the car’s maintenance history to make sure it’s up-to-date on its service. An irregular service history can lead to problems in the future.

Age vs. Mileage: Which Is More Important?

Age and mileage are both important factors to consider when you’re shopping for a used car. A new car with high mileage may be a better choice than an older car with low mileage. On the other hand, an older with high mileage and a spotless service record could be a great find. Consider all angles — not just mileage or age. In any case, keep the following points in mind when you’re shopping:

  • Cars that aren’t driven regularly tend to have higher repair bills. Mechanical failures, or issues with gaskets and rubber seals, can happen if a vehicle isn’t driven routinely.
  • A car with an extensive service history is preferable to one that has been neglected.
  • Vehicles with lower mileage are typically more expensive.
